Hi there!
The Sigma DP2 Merrill is a real great camera, I’m not kidding you, you really have to try it out for yourself. You won’t know what you’re missing if you never tried a Merrill. It’s so film like! Both colours and B&Ws! All the drawback is that you’ll need a few days to get used to the Sigma Photo Pro 5.5.1, which is very easy and user friendly. A little slow, like most of the softwares included by many top brands, but it gets the job done nice and perfect.
Once you’ve used the Merrill, you’ll want to take more and more pictures. I even already planned where to go for my next 10 (ten) trips, with the DP2 Merrill, of course. All I can think of is where, what and when I would be taking another tons of pictures with the Merrill. Not even once had I think of bringing my other cameras with me anymore. This is crazy! I think I’ll have to sue Sigma for this addiction. Could I do that?
Here are the last series of pictures I took with the Merrill. I went inside of an old building in the Kota Tua (translate: Old Town/Old Quarter) of Jakarta, Indonesia and took the whole series in there.

Today I just realised that my laptop’s monitor is way too bright compared to other NEW MONITORS. It’s about 0.75 stops of exposure brighter! Do you think that my pictures are almost all overly bright? Let me know, okay? Thanks.
The brightness of these images had been corrected again not long after I finished editing them, to match the brightness of the new monitors.

Only 2 cameras ever made me so excited and so passionate to shoot with. The first one is the Leica M9, and the second one is the Sigma DP2 Merrill. Maybe people will start questioning me why not a D4 or a D800E or a 1DX?
Well, first of all, I shoot raw, I don’t need any hocus-focus fancy camera features. And I’m not a sports cameraman. I don’t shoot wild life in some caves. I don’t want to break my neck because of the weight. I don’t enjoy the public attention for carrying large DSLRs. I don’t like people to think that I’m a Pro or a photo journalist. I don’t bla…bla…bla… I can mention 1001 reasons why I don’t like DSLRs. Perhaps except when I’m doing my commercial photo works or when I need to shoot under heavy rain, then I’ll carry a DSLR.
Clients loves big DSLRs. They think the bigger a DSLR, the result must be better, too. That’s of course normal that they think in such a way. What they didn’t care to know is that what really matters in creating good pictures is the photographer himself. You can give a non photographer person the best camera in the world, and in the end he still will not make better pictures than a Steve Mccurry with a $100 pocket camera.
Anyway, back to the Sigma DP2 Merrill, this is a fantastic camera. Looking at the full resolution images in my monitor, feels like looking at shots by MF (medium format) and view cameras. Excellent details in every shots. Amazingly vibrant colors, too.
The only drawback of this camera is the white balance in camera. It really sucks! It is only precise in sunny outdoor. THE SOLUTION: always use custom white balance. Buy an Expo Color Disc or just a Mennon white balance cap will do.
The first test shot I did indoor was so horrible, especially in the camera’s monitor. It was full of reddish and magenta-ish colors all over the picture. I even thought the camera sensor was damaged or something. Really a nightmare! But after getting that picture processed in the SPP (Sigma Photo Pro) 5.5.1, it turned out okay and normal. LOL! THE MAIN PROBLEM is because I took the shot underexposed. It would be much better if I had overexposed the shot by 0.3 or 0.7 stops. Highlights are easily recovered in the SPP.
Let me show you the ‘nightmare’ I mentioned just now. I used a Ricoh GR Digital II to capture how the image appeared in the Sigma DP2M. Here it is:

I am the first Indonesian Sigma Merrill user, I can be sure of that.
I contacted the Sigma Camera in Indonesia, they didn’t have any of the Merrills.
Even the Merrills are hard to find in Singapore and Malaysia, I tried so I know.
I asked a friend of mine, who happenned to be a camera shop owner (and a great guy) in Jakarta, to order the Sigma DP1 Merrill, DP2 Merrill and DP3 Merrill, from B&H in United States. The DP1 Merrill and the DP3 Merrill belongs to my other 2 friends. Now, we become the THREE SIGMAteers! One for all, all for one! LOL!

The Merrills came on Friday afternoon, and I took it out to shoot on last Sunday in Bandung, West Java.
At the end of the day, I came back with 230 shots (14Gb), 2 empty batteries, and a big smile on my face.
The Sigma DP2 Merrill is definitely one of the best things I owned in my life.
I really love this camera!
Very very very recommended to buy, use and keep!
Especially for experienced photographers.
(I don’t think it’s quite suitable for newbies, definitely will be very frustrating).

I wish Sigma would make full frame Foveon sensors for the next Merrill cameras.
A mirrorless Foveon sensor would be very nice, too. Definitely will buy one (or two)!

I have the new full frame Tokina FX lens with me!
This super wide lens is really that good and it delivers!
Sharp to every pixels on your monitor, produces nice colours, captures good dynamic range, nice skin tones, etc.
The body of the lens is solid and it comes with a nice and useful petal lens hood, too.
The Tokina 17-35mm F4 is only around US$650, a good bargain, right?
This lens is very suitable for those who love landscape and architectural/interior photography.
It’s a great lens! I love it!
